Water Treatment Answers is a free service that connects homeowners with local water treatment and filtration companies. We are not a water-treatment company or installer, and we do not perform the work ourselves.
A salt-based softener uses ion exchange to actually remove hardness minerals, so it stops scale and spotting. A salt-free conditioner does not remove them, it changes their form to reduce scale buildup, with no brine or drain needed. Salt-based is more effective on very hard water; salt-free skips the salt and the maintenance.
