Water Treatment in North Carolina

In North Carolina, public water systems are regulated by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (Public Water Supply Section) under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, and utilities must publish an annual water-quality report. A large share of North Carolina homes rely on private wells, and parts of the state have naturally occurring iron and, in some areas, arsenic or radon in groundwater. Private wells are not covered by those federal rules, so the EPA and CDC recommend testing your own water at least once a year.
